Squares & yarn

My stack of squares and an old fashioned laundry basket that is holding all my acrylic yarn for the swap.

Groovy Loops

This is a pattern from The Crochet Dude. I really liked the way it turned out. A friend wants me to make her an afghan using this pattern.

Square 18

Found this varigated yarn today while going through my storage unit. It's a smidge thinner than my regular acrylics so I will only be using it on the inside of the squares. I think I have some more yarn in storage but haven't checked all the totes yet.

Squares 16 & 17

16 is a pineapple blossom square in Primary from Red Heart. 17 is a rememberance square with hearts & ribbons done in yellow.

Getting there

Squares 13, 14 and 15. 13 and 15 are basic granny squares. 14 is a pineapple blossom.

Square 14

Had to tear this square out after starting it originally. Started it using an I hook as called for in the pattern. Ended up remaking with a K hook in order to achieve a 12" x 12" square.

Was looking good....

Once I figured out round 5 this square was working up so well. I think my tension may be too tight though. There's no way this was going to be a 12" x 12" square with only a few rounds left to go.  Pattern calls for an I hook. I am about to tear it all out and restart it with a K hook.

Square 10

Took advantage of my day off from work. Completed the ribbon square and two basic granny squares. This makes 10 of 55 squares completed.

Square 9

Picked up this yarn on clearance yesterday at Michael's. The color is Primary from Red Heart Super Saver. Working on another square with a different color (Pink Camo also from Red Heart). The squares are starting to work up fast. I am going to try to make a total of 57 squares so that everyone in the swap will get one and there will be the 2 squares for the Wounded Warrior afghans. Those two squares are already completed.

Only border left...

Ribbon square is done except for border. I did have to add two rows to get it to be a square. This pattern worked up fast and has given me an idea for a charity afghan to make after my square swap is done.

Square 8

Loving the way this square is working up! This will be my second square for the Wounded Warrior afghans. If I get all my other squares done early I might make more of these.

Mission accomplished

Completed all squares that I had partially done. This is square 7 of 55.

One more to go

Square 6 is complete. Getting ready to finish square 7.

Halfway to today's goal

Square 5 is now finished. This was an interesting one to make. The other two I want to finish today should work up fast as they are basic granny squares. Keeping my fingers crossed that I make my goal.

1 down, 3 to go

This is square 4 of 55. My goal today is to finish the 4 squares that I posted yesterday. Hoping to get them done while watching the NCAA Tournament.

I think it's time......

For me to stop starting squares and get some finished. These are squares 4, 5, 6 and 7. Once I get these finished I only have 47 more to go as we are up to 54 participants now.

Getting Started.....

I learned to crochet around 2nd grade from my Mom & Aunt.  It is a skill that I never stopped using.  It has helped me pass time and destress.  I have made everything from scarves to tote bags to afghans.  My largest project was an afghan I started after 9/11.  It gave me something to do while watching the endless news coverage of the event.  I did it in double crochet in a simple pattern of 5 rows per color using red, white and blue.  When I was finished it fit a queen size bed.

Recently, a Facebook friend and fellow Soldiers' Angel invited me to participate in a 12" Square Swap.  Although I have been crocheting as long as I have I had never made a "granny square".  I attempted to make one and when I realized how fast the basic pattern worked up, I signed on with the swap.  It was hoped that we would have 24 participants so that everyone would be able to make a 4' x 6' afghan.  We have far exceeded that number.  As of this writing, we are currently at 46 participants.  Our hostess, Dana, has requested that she be allowed to keep 2 of each person's squares in order to make afghans that will be donated to a Veteran or Wounded Warrior.  Everyone has agreed to this.  This would give everyone 44 squares to put together as they choose.

I plan to post pictures of my finished squares as I complete them.  I currently have 3 completed with 2 more in progress.  I will also post pictures of the squares I receive from the swap as well as my completed afghan.

Squares 2 & 3

Square 2 is another varigated yarn. Square 3 is Carolina Blue.

My first square

My first attempt at a granny square. I did the last two rounds in a solid purple as I didn't have enough of the main color.
