I learned to crochet around 2nd grade from my Mom & Aunt. It is a skill that I never stopped using. It has helped me pass time and destress. I have made everything from scarves to tote bags to afghans. My largest project was an afghan I started after 9/11. It gave me something to do while watching the endless news coverage of the event. I did it in double crochet in a simple pattern of 5 rows per color using red, white and blue. When I was finished it fit a queen size bed.
Recently, a Facebook friend and fellow Soldiers' Angel invited me to participate in a 12" Square Swap. Although I have been crocheting as long as I have I had never made a "granny square". I attempted to make one and when I realized how fast the basic pattern worked up, I signed on with the swap. It was hoped that we would have 24 participants so that everyone would be able to make a 4' x 6' afghan. We have far exceeded that number. As of this writing, we are currently at 46 participants. Our hostess, Dana, has requested that she be allowed to keep 2 of each person's squares in order to make afghans that will be donated to a Veteran or Wounded Warrior. Everyone has agreed to this. This would give everyone 44 squares to put together as they choose.
I plan to post pictures of my finished squares as I complete them. I currently have 3 completed with 2 more in progress. I will also post pictures of the squares I receive from the swap as well as my completed afghan.
